Seeds for Sale

On an extremely icy morning in Benzie county, some very interesting and knowledgeable people gathered.  They braved the rough roads to share seeds that they have meticulously cultivated over the years.

As a self professed “Plant Killer” , I may have been regarded a bit warily, but they happily shared how certain sunflowers produce the most oils for pressing, which tomatoes can become giants (very important to my tomato loving husband!) and how watermelon can be grown (never have had much luck here in Northern, Mi.).

First the growers plant large samples of different plants,  then those that are both hardy, excellent producers, and somewhat drought tolerant, have their seeds saved. Then you can purchase them for about the same price as the ones in the big box stores!  All the testing has been done for you!

Personally, I would suggest searching out growers in your area who share this passion or check out seedsavers.org for seeds or local info.

If you would like to learn more, the current issue of  Edible Grande Traverse has a wonderful piece that explores local farms and heirloom seed saving :) Now I am wondering, are you a plant killer like myself or green thumb all the way? I mean, I can keep aloe plants alive…
