Autumn in Mesick, MI.

This weekend is supposed to be just as nice as this day in Autumn. I sure hope so.. I have to drain the pond and rescue frogs, we may put in a brick path, and the garden needs to be tilled under for Spring..

So I am really glad I had free time to drive around the backroads of Mesick and visit with the owner of Max’s Vegetables ( 8419 W. 8 Road).  Around here a chat turns into a 45 minute long conversation but it’s so worth it for the great stories and the yummy squash and sweet corn I bought.

The owner (not sure if his name is actually Max…) imparted tales of his Insurance company in Illinois and his kids and grand kids. Showed me newspaper clippings of the one dancing. Told history of his family being here as far back as the 1930’s. His Great Uncle ran a store next to the train tracks until men brought Dipthereia and killed half of them. Homes burned and were rebuilt, people moved and sold the land but he and his brother still come here each year to farm and see their vegetables… I realized I have been buying pumpkins, squash, and such from him now for almost 13 years! I think I will go back for that bumpy pumpkin..it’s pretty cool!
